a ‘weekend wedding’ celebration at Ta Mill
With family and friends spread around the country, Lauren and Joe didn’t have one place in mind for their wedding. They decided that it would have to be a ‘weekend wedding’ celebration because so many of their guests would have to travel wherever they chose
"It was important to us to find somewhere where we could have a relaxed feel and lots of outdoor space in the countryside, without strict time constraints or pressure to use certain vendors etc"
Joe is from Devon and they both love Cornwall, when they visited Ta Mill they immediately knew that it was the perfect place for them.
"The surroundings at Ta Mill are beautiful, it was peaceful and we could have most of our guests stay on-site for the whole weekend"
"We met Helen who was so friendly and helpful and made sure that we had covered everything, especially as we were organising a wedding in Cornwall from Scotland"
Lauren and Joe stayed a couple of times before their wedding, and Helen provided them with lots of helpful advice, ideas and options to help make the whole weekend everything that they wanted.
"It was so important to us to have a relaxed feel and the opportunity to be outdoors"
We invited everyone for drinks, pizza and nibbles in Ta Mill for Friday night, which was a great chance for our families to meet and to catch up with friends.
Wedding photography by Steven Prebble Photography
They found their photographer Steven Prebble just by searching on the internet and looking at portfolios to get a feel for the style of photography they were looking for.
"When we met up with Seven for the first time, he really put us at ease. Steven is a really friendly, funny and relaxed guy and assured us that he would capture the day without hundreds of posed photos.
We had a pre-wedding shoot so that we could get more comfortable being photographed as neither of us were! For this Steven took us to a beautiful beach nearby and the photos were lovely"
Lauren and Joe married outside by the lake, and then had canapés and drinks in the beautiful Ta Mill courtyard. Followed by a relaxed wedding breakfast with speeches in a marquee.
"I found wooden table decorations on Amazon and had photos of us with people on each table in wooden blocks
We had a lot of children so I made them boxes with toys and games to keep them happy during the meal
After the wedding feast everyone gathered for drinks outside whilst the marquee was set up for the Ceilidh band, called Sheer Hoppidy
"Sheer Hoppidy were great at getting everyone dancing having a Ceilidh is great for people to meet and mix together
For the evening we had made our own playlist and hired equipment, and Joes brother Sam DJ’d for us"
Wedding catering by Big Pan Parties
Wanting something more relaxed than a formal sit-down meal, Helen from Ta Mill recommended Sue from Big Pan Parties.
"We met with Sue at her home and she kindly cooked a lovely selection for us to try, which was delicious. We decided to have a huge Paella and a vegetarian Moroccan style stew, which both looked, smelled and tasted amazing!
"Everybody commented on how delicious it was and it was the best paella we’ve ever had!
"They were based outside of the marquee and cooked in huge pans. The food was really colourful and it worked well with people going up and collecting their choices in groups of tables"
A giant dessert!
Desert was a giant Eton mess with chocolate brownies and was amazing to look at and eat!
For evening food, Lauren made scones with Cornish clotted cream and jam, and fresh mini Cornish pasties and sausage rolls, delivered warm by Cornish maids.
The Wedding Cake
The cake was made by a friend and had three layers, carrot cake, lemon and chocolate and cherry.
"We gave Alex free reign to design it how he liked and he did an incredible job!"
Hair and Makeup
The bride and bridesmaids had their hair done by Avril Wicks.
"Avril was lovely and put everyone at ease, and we all loved our hair.
The bridal parties makeup was done by Melanie from Blush Bude.
"Melanie was also great, really friendly and chatty and did a fantastic job. I had trials with both and was relieved to have found them"
Lauren found her dress in Cambridgeshire
"I had no idea what I wanted but the girls at Bridal Boutique gave me some options to try based on my description of the wedding, and I chose the second one I tried on!
It was simple with a lace strapey top and chiffon bottom; we added a thin sparkly belt and plain mid-length veil. It was really comfortable and I felt like it fitted in with the relaxed feel of the day. I borrowed some pearl earrings from my bridesmaid Kim to have as something borrowed"
Lauren's flowers were by a friend (Helen Jane Floristry). Helen showed her lots of styles and flowers and made the most beautiful bouquets, milk churn displays and flowers for the arch which they married under.
"She also made gorgeous flowers in jam jars for the tables, and gypsophila tied to chairs lining the aisle, as well as buttonholes and some extra pieces for my hair, and brought them all the way from Cambridgeshire down to Cornwall"
favourite part of the day
Neither of us can choose a favourite part of the day, we were so lucky to have sunshine and everything go so smoothly! The best part for me was having all of our friends and family together and everyone being so happy and joining in with everything. We were really glad that we had the whole weekend to spend more time with everyone too.
advice to other couples planning a wedding
"Our advice to other couples planning a wedding would be to make it your own in whichever way you like, and meet vendors with lots of time before so that you can get lots of advice and work out the details.
We made a list before we started looking for venues with things that we wouldn't want to compromise on and what was most important to us and went from there. There were lots of smaller details that we hadn’t thought about, but Helen guiding us through and making suggestions was invaluable.
We had a spreadsheet with costs, guests rsvp’s and where people were staying to keep us on track.
We’re both very laid-back people but still wanted to make sure that it wasn’t a stressful process. We reminded each other to take time on the day to look around and take everything in.
We also had a polaroid camera for our guest book which is lovely to look back at"
At eeek! HQ we love to read about each couples love story...
